Project SUPERTED has been awarded a FET-OPen grant within Horizon 2020's RIA funding scheme (Research and Innovation action). The SUPERTED consortium is made up of University of Jyväskylä (the project coordinator), the Spanish, French and Italian national research councils (CSIC, CNRS and CNR) and the SME Bihurcrystal, specializing in developing and commercialising both equipment and advanced materials for scientific research. Two new studies using curved crystals have been published! The first, by S. Blomberg et al. investigates the catalytic activity of the steps of a curved Pd(111) crystal using Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence, and elucidates the dependence of the light-off temperature on step-type (type A vs type B). Ilyn et al., investigates the structure of a curved Ni(111) using Low Energy Electron Diffraction and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, exploring the occurrence of step-doubling as a function of temperature and vicinal plane. The 7th edition of the surface science conference Encuentro de Física y Química de Superficies 2016 is taking place at the Centro Científico Tecnológico Litoral of Santa Fe, Argentina from the 26th to the 29th of October. BihurCrystal and the research group ESISNA (Structure of Nanoscopic Systems Group, of the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales in Madrid) have begun a collaboration within the frame of the Retos-Colaboración 2015 call. This call is part of the Spanish National Programme for Research Aimed at the Challenges of Society that is financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The joint project, called TESELA (tessera or tile in Spanish), will explore new bottom-up approaches for the obtention of high-quality graphene films directly on non-conductive substrates. Another work using curved crystals has recently been published in Nano Letters by A. Miccio et al.. A curved rutile TiO2(110) crystal, produced by BihurCrystal, was used to investigate the presence and role of oxygen vacancies on the surface for different terrace widths using STM and ARPES. Rutile is the most stable polymorph of titanium dioxide and is used in fields such as catalysis and memristors. TiO2‘s lattice defects — oxygen vacancies in particular — play an important role in many of its applications, because they turn the otherwise insulating material into an n-type semiconductor. BihurCrystal’s first deposition system — the ALI-1000 — has finally been launched this month. ALI stands for Atomic Layer Injection, and is a versatile tool for depositing molecules and nanoparticles from solution in UHV. ALI is especially useful for large or delicate molecules (including biomolecules) that degrade when heated, and can therefore not be deposited by evaporation. The ALI Deposition System (displayed on the left) is made up of a pulse valve, used to inject the liquid into the UHV chamber, and a pre-injection system through which the liquid is introduced along with the carrier gas that is also necessary for injection. BihurCrystal S.L. was created under the guidance of BIC-Berrilan and with the support of the institutions from which the start-up emerged, the Centro de Física de Materiales (CFM, CSIC-UPV/EHU) and the Donostia International Physics Center. The business project took shape in BIC-Berrilan’s business center, located in the J. M.
