Two new studies using curved crystals have been published! The first, by S. Blomberg et al. investigates the catalytic activity of the steps of a curved Pd(111) crystal using Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence, and elucidates the dependence of the light-off temperature on step-type (type A vs type B). (Read a summary of the paper in our portfolio.) The second publication, by M. Ilyn et al., investigates the structure of a curved Ni(111) using Low Energy Electron Diffraction and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, exploring the occurrence of step-doubling as a function of temperature and vicinal plane. A striking asymmetry towards step-doubling is found for different step-types. (Read a summary of the[...]
The 7th edition of the surface science conference Encuentro de Física y Química de Superficies 2016 is taking place at the Centro Científico Tecnológico Litoral of Santa Fe, Argentina from the 26th to the 29th of October. Jorge Lobo Checa, researcher at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Aragón (ICMA), Spain, and co-author of several papers using curved surfaces, will be giving a talk on the curved crystal concept: Curved crystal surfaces: A genuine playground for Surface Science. The talk will discuss his work to date on curved surfaces, which includes the study of step-lattice interactions, scattering of surface[...]
BihurCrystal and the research group ESISNA (Structure of Nanoscopic Systems Group, of the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales in Madrid) have begun a collaboration within the frame of the Retos-Colaboración 2015 call. This call is part of the Spanish National Programme for Research Aimed at the Challenges of Society that is financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The joint project, called TESELA (tessera or tile in Spanish), will explore new bottom-up approaches for the obtention of high-quality graphene films directly on non-conductive substrates. The most wide-spread method to produce graphene is by the decomposition of hydrocarbons on metal substrates, which act as catalyzers in this process. Graphene obtained in[...]
BihurCrystal is pleased to announce a collaboration with Avactec for the distribution of their recently launched deposition system ALI (Atomic Layer Injection). Avactec is a distribution company based in Madrid that distributes in the Spanish and Portuguese markets for a wide range of manufacturers. With over 30 years experience in the field of vacuum technology, the company specializes in the distribution of equipment used for vacuum deposition and investigation under UHV conditions. We are looking forward to working together with Avactec!
Another work using curved crystals has recently been published in Nano Letters by A. Miccio et al.. A curved rutile TiO2(110) crystal, produced by BihurCrystal, was used to investigate the presence and role of oxygen vacancies on the surface for different terrace widths using STM and ARPES. Rutile is the most stable polymorph of titanium dioxide and is used in fields such as catalysis and memristors. TiO2‘s lattice defects — oxygen vacancies in particular — play an important role in many of its applications, because they turn the otherwise insulating material into an n-type semiconductor. Thanks to the curved sample approach, the authors are[...]
BihurCrystal’s first deposition system — the ALI-1000 — has finally been launched this month. ALI stands for Atomic Layer Injection, and is a versatile tool for depositing molecules and nanoparticles from solution in UHV. ALI is especially useful for large or delicate molecules (including biomolecules) that degrade when heated, and can therefore not be deposited by evaporation. The ALI Deposition System (displayed on the left) is made up of a pulse valve, used to inject the liquid into the UHV chamber, and a pre-injection system through which the liquid is introduced along with the carrier gas that is also necessary for injection. When[...]
BihurCrystal S.L. was created under the guidance of BIC-Berrilan and with the support of the institutions from which the start-up emerged, the Centro de Física de Materiales (CFM, CSIC-UPV/EHU) and the Donostia International Physics Center. The business project took shape in BIC-Berrilan’s business center, located in the J. M. Korta building on the university campus, and the necessary technology was developed by BihurCrystal’s team at the CFM, in the frame of an industrial development project. BIC2Once defined and licensed this technology served as the foundation of the start-up company. BihurCrystal’s growing need for a space in which to continue with[...]
BihurCrystal has been awarded a grant within the Spanish Ministry's program for the promotion of talent and employment (Programa de Promoción del Talento y su Empleabilidad), which is part of the state plan for Sciencific and Technical Research and Innovation (Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica, Técnica y de Innovación 2013-2016
A study on a curved Pt(111) crystal produced by BihurCrystal has been published in Nature Communications this month. [Read the paper here.] Platinum is widely used as a catalyst in a huge number of relevant processes. Perhaps most well-known is its role in catalytic converters, where Pt catalyzes the oxidation of carbon monoxide, converting toxic CO to the more harmless CO2. In spite of decades of research and their extensive use in industrial applications, catalytic processes are still not fully understood at the most basic level. In order to study catalytic reactions at the atomic scale, clean metal surfaces in UHV can serve as model systems. Surface defects or steps are often preferred[...]
